So a few weeks ago in sociology we were talking about nature vs. nurture, and at first I thought it was pretty much half and half, but now I'm thinking otherwise....based on the movies we watched and the things we talked about, I really think it's a combination of the both but mostly nurture. A girl named Genie was abused by her father as a child and was locked in her room until about age 11. When she came out she didn't have any social abilities and resorted to doing things in almost an animal-like manner. Sure that's only one example, but that's so obvious right there!

On a much much smaller scale, I've had the chicken pox since thursday and have been held captive in my house. No going places. No seeing anyone. Basically no life. Usually only one of my parents has been home at a time over the past 5 days, so needless to say, I haven't been socializing very much besides a few phone calls. When one of my friends came over who had already had the chicken pox, she dropped off a movie but then we ended up talking for 20 minutes after and it put me in such a good mood just to talk to someone! It felt really weird, though, even though I had only been stuck at home for about 5 days so far! I think that also supports the nurture side of the nature vs. nurture debate- it shows how big of an impact people have on our lives and how much we need relationships to get by :)

I took sociology last semester and I remember watching the movie about Genie. It is so amazing to see the affects the human interaction has on people.

That's very true. One of the most vital human neccessities is socialization. Humans thrive with companionship. We seek people to play with, work with, judge, and live with.
About Genie:
I'm still curious as to whether or not she was actually mentally retarded in the first place, as her father claimed she was.
Or whether she became that way after long years of solitude. Either way, we'll never know, and it's so sad to think about.

I wish I would've taken sociology; it seems like a pretty cool class. Nature vs nurture is an interesting idea. On a less related note, I've never had the chicken pox!

I also felt the same way as you before we talked about that in class. I completely agree with yur view on nature vs. nurture. I have had similar experiences where I'm home sick and will be cheered up when somebody cals or texts me just to talk.

It may not be nature, but insecurity. This girl that was locked in her room didn't know anything about being around people, so she had to learn how to do things on her own. I can kind of relate because my parents locked me in my room for eleven too. But being social is part of our nature so you could say that it is against human nature to be off on your own.
